Our approach to talking therapy aims to contribute towards generational change by taking a trauma informed, holistic, whole community approach to healing from social, cultural & racial adversities.
We specialize in intercultural therapy for issues associated with childhood trauma including CSA, sexual assault, domestic abuse, generational & racialised trauma.
Our intercultural approach is an integration of Afrikan-centred Ubuntu philosophy & culturally sensitive psychotherapy (Intercultural Therapy).
We integrate various schools of thought to create a holistic fusion of Western psychology & global majority intercultural understanding.
The therapeutic journey is a collaborative process -
'you get out what you put in'.
We work with you to identify aspects of your life that might be holding you back from your aspirations & goals, we support you to establish a set of sustainable tools for your 'well-being tool kit' to support your healing journey during and after therapy.
We are advocates for change and provide specialist transformational counselling and psychotherapy services throughout the UK. Our services are also internationally available. We have a particular interest in contributing to improving mental health service access, experience and outcomes for People of Colour (PoC), African, Asian, Caribbean diasporic communities, dual heritage persons, & those that identify as coming from an ethnic minority or global majority nation.
Our approach to talking therapy considers culture, ethnicity, identity & spirituality as fundamental aspects of your mental health experience.

It's really important to be able to talk about race racism and discrimination in therapy without fear of judgement, and feel understood without having to over explain things."
"Talking about private things in my culture is not really something we do, but this therapy has really helped me learn how to open up and understand myself better."
"Thank you so much for your help, I would have never believed that I could be the person I am now before I met you."
Holistic therapy that truly holds the
‘person’ at the ‘center’ of their therapy.
Therapy is tailored to accommodate individual therapeutic needs.
A combination of psychological & theoretical concepts and therapeutic approaches are used to aid the healing process. Below are some of the therapies we use. The list is not exhaustive.
Afrikan/Black Psychology is centred in understanding human beingness & the meaning making systems involved in human functioning. A focus on restoration of natural orders or laws of attraction help to support & develop sustainable equilibrium.
Cultural Psychology takes into consideration your ethnicity, cultural heritage, and spiritual beliefs, and acknowledges that your culture influences psychological and behavioural tendencies, which have an impact on the psyche and mental health experiences.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) aims to identify negative patterns of thought that may cause feelings of stress, anxiety or persistent low mood. It can help to modify your thinking patterns to achieve positive cognition's and can be integrated into the psychotherapy process, or can be a self-help therapy often offered through the NHS in the UK.
Existential Therapy is focused more on the here and now rather then past experiences, although the impact of past experiences is given some consideration. This approach uses a philosophical perspective to explore difficulties and encourages individuals to take ownership of their lives authentically rather then superficially.
Person-Centered Therapy is at the center of ethical therapeutic practice and consists of the three core conditions taken from the main principles of Carl Rogers' Person- Centred approach. At Aya Training & Development there is an expansion upon these conditions with a more authentic cultural perspective.
Psychodynamic approaches analytically explores levels of consciousness & the effects of past experiences that may be manifesting in the present. Insights are given to enhance understanding which enables change and personal growth, by bringing unconscious processes into conscious awareness. We use Psychodynamic approaches to establish attachment styles, personality types, 'left or right brain thinking' in relation to 'splitting' as a primary defense mechanism or coping strategy; and much more.
Transactional Analysis (TA) analytically explores the way people communicate with each other considering three primary 'Ego states'. TA theory suggests that people transact (communicate) in either Parent, Adult or Child states, especially during times of conflict or uncomfortable situations. When adults communicate with each other as if they are a Parent or a Child, unhelpful responses often occur. TA is incorporated to enable clients to develop better communication skills, by enhancing Adult-to-Adult transactions; especially when working through common relationship issues including unhealthy family dynamics.
Transpersonal Therapy is fundamentally spiritually based in the sense that experiences outside of the physical realm (body and mind) is given great consideration. The state of one's spirit, their spiritual journey or life's purpose is considered within the healing process.
